A lab-grown chicken made entirely from animal cells was served at a restaurant on Saturday for the first time in America.
According to Business Insider, Good Meat and Upsid Foods recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which deemed their laboratory chicken safe to eat. Also, the two companies received USDA approval, which allowed them to sell their products. Upside Foods laboratory chicken was served for the first time in America at a restaurant located in San Francisco. Winners of a social media contest were the first to try lab-raised chicken at Bar Crenn, the companies announced. The laboratory chicken was fried in tempura batter and placed in a black ceramic dish along with a roasted red pepper and other edible vegetables and flowers.
Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO and founder of Upside Foods, said: “This represents a giant leap toward a world where people no longer have to choose between their favorite foods and a thriving planet.” I can’t wait for more people to try this food for the first time. It is a magical moment that inspires an exciting world of new possibilities. Good Meat and Upside Foods are among the companies that, with the support of influential figures such as Bill Gates, are trying to market lab-produced meat and other food without the need to kill animals.
They want to reduce the environmental impact of the meat industry and give those who don’t eat meat due to ethical concerns about the slaughter of animals another choice.
Experts say it will take some time before mass production of laboratory meat becomes possible. CNN reported that Goodmeat is going to serve its lab chicken at China Chilcano restaurant in Washington, DC.
